Fan of Ed Sheeran… in London

Born in England, Inoka de Silva is very Sri Lankan and has lived in Colombo for over 20 years.

Inoka is now back in England, and told us she was enjoying life there.

She is a music lover and has seen several major bands in action in London, including Lionel Richie, Bon Jovi and Kylie Minogue. The most recent turned out to be Ed Sheeran.

And that’s how it all happened…

Inoka is a huge Ed Sheeran fan and, in particular, loves his monster hit “Perfect”, which also happens to be my favorite song.

In November last year (2021), his idol was interviewed on television, where he talked about concert dates, all over England. And, when he mentioned making a week-long stint at Wembley Stadium, London in June 2022, Inoka was thrilled and sprang into action.

She and her friends immediately made the necessary reservations for the second concert at Wembley Stadium on June 25 and waited impatiently for the big day to arrive.

And, when that exciting day arrived, Inoka and his friends arrived at the venue at 4:00 p.m. and were inside the stadium within an hour.

The show started at 6:00 p.m., Inoka said, to a full crowd, with a supporting act doing the needful.

“Ed Sheeran was ready to appear, on stage, an hour later, after the opening act had done its part, and the crowd went into ecstasy when the countdown began, on the giant screen – from 10 to 01….”

According to Inoka, the show was well calculated and clever – and there really was a little bit of everything – from the twinkling phone lights of “Perfect”, to “Sing”, a perfect stadium anthem or “Galway Girl”.

“There were a few from his last record as well, including ‘Bad Habits’ and ‘Overpass Graffiti.’

“The beauty of the Ed Sheeran gig was that virtually every track is already a stream hit. It’s hard to pick just one highlight; he even incorporated medleys just to cram in more. And he managed to soar through convincing from fast tempo to ballad without disturbing the flow.

“Armed with his signature guitar, it’s clear that Ed Sheeran is a musician who knows exactly how to rock the crowd. On the contrary, it’s starting to sound a little too polite, but his use and explanation of his loop station and live overlay, like in “Bloodstream” and “Shivers”, in addition to talking about his writing process of songs, helped keep the evening grounded.

“However, I would say the only setback was the introduction of a band, awkwardly dispersed and feeling a bit lost in the crowd – if anything, reaffirming the artist’s undeniable presence on the solo stage.

“And we also had a surprise – Sam Smith made an appearance on stage, as a guest artist, with the song ‘Stay With Me’.

“For me and my friends, and my niece, it was a perfect night, made even more perfect when he sang ‘Perfect’ and also ‘I’m a Mess’.

“Believe me, I got a little emotional and almost cried when he sang ‘Perfect’.”

‘Perfect’ I was told is still hugely popular in Britain and whenever a busker (street artist) performs in public places crowds gather when this song is performed , and many also sing.
