NPP Conference: Order to remove undemocratic and dictatorial billboards and campaign boards – Director of CEBRE | Politics

Executive Director of the Center for Economics and Business Research (CEBRE), Gordon Newman Asamoah condemned a directive from the leadership of the New Patriotic Party regarding the upcoming national conference in the Ashanti region.

He describes the order to remove billboards and campaign signs erected as dictatorial and undemocratic. A sign that can harm the party’s long-standing democratic credentials.

In a radio interview on Monday, December 13, Mr Asamoah said:

“I’ve read the guidelines, but I don’t want to wonder whether people will follow them or not. Such conferences are a means for candidates to present their interests and themselves to delegates and party leaders. And so ordering the removal of those campaign billboards and banning all activity associated with internal contests is undemocratic to me. “

“This is a clear sign of a panic reaction. It features some individuals and leaders who have lost ground and thus want to intimidate the new faces who have recently gained ground. Over the years before the candidatures opened, billboards are being erected, this thing is not new in politics.

“The fact that you are a leader and feel threatened by another should not force you to give such direction. People easily take directions on face value. But before such directives are issued, there is a lot to be done, he added.

On December 10, the NPP issued a directive stating that prior to the conference, “billboards and / or billboards, banners or any type of exterior signage with images and / or names of members Individuals, with or without the consent of the individual, must be acceptable. This, they say, applies to the Greater Kumasi metropolis region. All of these displays, if they are already installed, should be removed. ‘

Meanwhile, some party supporters have called for a review of the directive, but party leadership says it is a step in the right direction.
