DHS alumnus wins gold for Pomona-Pitzer College

Durango High School alumnus Ruby Epstein (2018) won two gold medals in diving at the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship for Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens Feb Saturday and Sunday. Epstein won the 1-meter and 3-meter diving conference championships at California Lutheran University.

In the women’s 3-metre dive, Epstein averaged 45.89 points per dive, finishing with a total of 445.80 to come from behind and pass second place Sydney Patterson of Redlands (441.90).

Epstein won his second diving title on Sunday in the 1 meter competition with a total score of 467.15 points, again beating Patterson of Redlands by 43.15 points.

After a year-long hiatus from competitive diving due to COVID, Epstein returned this season and earned the No. 1 seed for both events at the conference championships.

Epstein was also selected as SICAC Athlete of the Week three times during the 2021-22 season. She will then compete at the NCAA Regional Championships in San Antonio on February 25-26.

Epstein began diving under Coach Mark Fleming with the Durango Diving Club and Durango High School as a rookie at 1 meter and began competing in the 3 meter class in college. She will graduate from Pomona College in December with a degree in cognitive science with a concentration in computer science and a minor in economics.
