Camden Lecture with Thomas Remington and “Germany Today: A Model of Democratic Capitalism?

Camden Conference and Belfast Free Library host Thomas Remington for his conference “Germany Today: A Model of Democratic Capitalism?” »Tuesday, November 9 at 6.30 p.m., on Zoom.

The leadership transition in Germany after Angela Merkel’s long tenure as Chancellor provides an opportunity to assess where Germany stands today and where it might be heading in the future. This conference presents an overview of German politics, society and economy. It explores the question of how Germany arrived at its current situation of relatively stable democracy, economic prosperity and social peace. It reviews the evolution of the German system in the post-war period, including the tensions it faced as a result of unification, immigration and right-wing populist authoritarian movements. He asks to what extent the German system will be able to meet the challenges of the coming decades.

Thomas F. Remington is Visiting Professor at Harvard University, Senior Research Associate at Higher School of Economics in Moscow, Russia, and Professor (Emeritus) of Political Science at Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia. He is the author of numerous books and articles devoted to Russian and Chinese political institutions and social policy.
